Last night I attended an eagle court of honor for five young women who were founders of troop 2220. It was really sweet. Troop 220 still kind of treats me as a celebrity whenever I visit. This may have gotten a little worse since my death defying stunt and some of them are also concerned about my health. 220 is probably the only place where I have this “celebrity” status and it feels good and weird at the same time. Definitely have some of the “grandpa” vibe as well. That’s just one of the complicated emotions that I go through when I visit the troop.
First of all I am incredibly proud of the troop and of my part in getting I do consider my role in bringing girls into scouting which was more than simply starting to 220 but that was the big part of it was the most significant thing that I have done in my life certainly more significant than anything that I ever did in my career and I believe it was a change for the better. Can I am incredibly proud of the troop the adults volunteers that have taken the troop over and kept it running the youth and especially the youth leaders and to see them so totally embracing the scouting program and excelling in it has been a very gratifying experience. And I know that just a few years ago none of these young women would have had the opportunity to to reach this level of success or to achieve the evil rank.
On the other hand there is part of me that remains uncomfortable with gender segregated troops I recognize the irony in fact that I started each undersegregate tube. And I still believe that it was a necessary first step that having a strong female only troop really propelled some girls into their success in the program. But I think that the future of Scouting is co in it is a different world that we are moving to and I think the gender segregated troops are a short term solution and one that will fade in history.
Trip to 20 recently changed their charter organization to an Hindu church the good news is that their previous charter org already had a boy troop but it would not be impossible for this Hindu temple to start a boy troop that was linked to 20 I don’t think this will happen really soon but I think it is open as a possibility and will eventually happen.
