What are the Goals of the Super Rich?

Let me start off by saying simply that I am financially pretty comfortable. It wasn’t always that way. There were times in my life when I had real trouble making rent, and other times when I was one deep in debt and one paycheck away from homeless.

But I got lucky, and over the decades managed to move myself into a more secure status. At a certain point, my wife and I decided that we had enough, and that we could exit the rat race of silicon valley. By no means could I say we are “rich” but as long as we live frugally, as long as we are careful with our money, we can live well. While we have some “retirement” jobs, most of our time is spend doing volunteer work, trying to make the world a better place, and just enjoying ourselves.

Which is part of the reason that I can’t wrap my head around what motivates many of those that are already wildly rich not only to keep working, but to keep doing so in a way that actively harms other people.

My number one exhibit is Tucker Carlson. Carlson has an estimated net worth of $30million. He was an heir to the Swanson Frozen Foods fortune the bossiness was sold to Campbell Soup and Carlson has no stake in the company. A few years ago, there was a movement to boycott Swanson in protest to Carlson’s bullshit. It fizzled, but wouldn’t have made any difference in Carlson’s worth even if it had been successful

But here is the thing. Carlson knows what he is doing is bull shit. He knows that the Trump presidency was a disaster, and says so in private texts. So why? I do not get it.
